The Great Outdoors Round Up 2016

As you’re probably aware, our commitment to the outdoors extends well beyond kitting out youngsters with waterproofs and wellies! We’re on a mission to share the message and the benefits of outdoor learning, and the positive impact it has on children’s development.

2016 has been quite the year; there have been so many events, conferences and campaigns celebrating the joy of the outdoors and all things wild. We thought it would be only right to share our favourites and what we have been up to…just in case you missed them. If you did, don’t worry there’s plenty more in store for the New Year!

Outdoor Classroom Day & Empty Classroom Day

Backed by Persil’s Dirt is Good campaign, Empty Classroom Day celebrated and inspired thousands of teachers, schools and students across the country to step outdoors for the day and take part in an activity or lesson of their choice. Thousands took the plunge and signed up for an awesome day of trying out subjects outside the confines of their classroom.

After the huge success of the summer event, the concept returned on the 6th October with Outdoor Classroom Day. Building on the initial idea it became a global campaign creating a unique opportunity to connect with other schools around the world and share their new outdoor experiences. Roll on 2017…

The Big Wild Sleep Out with the RSPB

Back in July, the RSPB launched their brilliant Big Wild Sleep Out.  For the fourth year running, thousands of families set up camp in their back gardens or RSPB reserves. The idea behind the campaign was to further children’s interaction with nature, and develop their understanding of wildlife. Families all across the country had a wonderful evening – we can’t wait to do it all again next summer.

 National Insect Week

Outdoor enthusiasts from all over the UK celebrated our favourite creepy crawlies at a series of amazing events throughout the month of June. From insect inspired activities to outdoor music concerts, youngsters enjoyed learning about the bugs and their back garden habitats. Run by the Royal Entomological Society, the events run every other year…so you’ll have to wait until 2018 for more insect instalments!

Muddy Puddles got in on the action by holding a number of free outdoor events, conferences and fun press days for families and schools all over the country.

We held three series of our infamous Muddy Events. Taking place in various locations, all at the same time, families joined us for some awesome outdoor fun. In April we explored London, Manchester and Bristol in a successful Scavenger Hunt. July saw families from Surrey, the West Midlands, London, Manchester and Bristol for a Letters from the Wild craft workshop. And we ended the year with a half term Halloween special, reaching as far as Glasgow! Our free Muddy Events will be back next year…but with a difference. Keep your eyes peeled.

Our Muddy schools team also hosted two exciting conferences for the education sector, exploring the ways outdoor learning can be incorporated into the curriculum. It was so inspiring to have so many schools join us and get excited about the outdoors and how it can be used within education. We can’t wait to kick off our New Year with another great conference! Who’s joining us?

AW16 Muddy Puddles Originals Collection.

Back in October (feels so long ago now!) we welcomed some magnificent Muddy parents and brilliant lifestyle bloggers to our wonderful “Woodland Feast” at the Skip Garden in Kings Cross, London. Explorers from all corners of the country joined us for some lovely nature craft activities, Little House of Science sessions and plenty of yummy food! Our Woodland Feast also provided us the perfect chance to showcase some forthcoming Muddy Puddles kit, ready for a wet and windy 2017.
